# Get started at the front desk (/docs/en/get-started/for-front-desk)

At the front desk you register patients, keep the calendar, contact patients and make sure open work has an owner. Salisan gives you the **Secretary** role for this. It reaches every patient and every calendar, and it keeps clinical records closed, so you can coordinate care without reading or writing findings.

## Your first week [#first-week]

1. Accept your invitation and finish your profile, then set up two-factor protection. See [Join your practice](/docs/en/get-started/join-your-practice) and [Account and security](/docs/en/get-started/account-and-security#two-factor). About 10 minutes.
2. Learn the sidebar, Home and search. See [Find your way around](/docs/en/get-started/find-your-way-around). About 10 minutes.
3. Search for a patient before you register one. If none matches, choose **New patient** in **Patients**, enter the essentials and check any **Possible match already in this practice** warning. See [Patients](/docs/en/guides/patients#register). About 10 minutes.
4. Add the treating clinician to the patient's care team with **Assign**, because a patient you create starts with no care team. See [Roles and access](/docs/en/get-started/roles-and-access#care-team). About 5 minutes.
5. Book an appointment with **New → Appointment** in the patient bar. Check the people, time and place, then choose **Book**. See [Appointments](/docs/en/guides/appointments#book). About 10 minutes.
6. Send the patient a form with **Send to patient** in **Requests**, and follow up when it is still waiting. See [Patient forms and requests](/docs/en/guides/patient-forms#send). About 10 minutes.
7. Write an email from the patient's **Emails** page and check its delivery. See [Patient messages](/docs/en/guides/patient-messages#write). About 10 minutes.
8. Open **Tasks**, choose **All** or **Unassigned**, and assign open work to the right colleague. See [Tasks](/docs/en/guides/tasks#take). About 10 minutes.

## What you can and can't do [#permissions]

With the **Secretary** role you can:

* Create patients, edit any patient's details and assign clinicians to patients.
* Read and manage every colleague's calendar.
* Read all patient communication and send email, forms and requests.
* Create tasks, assign them and see all tasks.
* Read shared documents, create documents and use templates and the content library.
* View Insights and use the Agent.

You can't:

* Read or write clinical records. The **Visits** and **Care plans** pages do not appear in a patient's record for you, and you cannot start or sign a visit.
* Be added to a patient's care team. Care teams hold clinicians.
* Invite people, change roles or teams, change practice settings or manage billing.
* Create or publish templates.

You can send a form that you cannot read the answers to. Hand the answers to a clinician with access. A sent request or a queued email does not prove the patient received or answered it, so check **Requests** and **Emails** for the status. See [Roles and access](/docs/en/get-started/roles-and-access).

## Keep learning [#keep-learning]

Continue with the **Front desk essentials** course in Learn. Start with its first lesson on [patients](/docs/en/learn/front-desk-patients), or see the [Learn overview](/docs/en/learn/index).
