# Calendar settings (/docs/en/guides/calendar-settings)

Calendar settings control how your calendar looks, when you can be booked, and how the practice books. Open the calendar and choose the **Calendar settings** icon in the toolbar. On a phone, open the toolbar menu.

The page has two groups. **Personal** (**Calendar view** and **Availability**) is open to every member. **Practice** (**Scheduling** and **Appointment types**) needs the **Configure calendar and appointment types** permission, which Owner and Admin have.

## Set your calendar view [#view]

Open **Calendar view**. These are your defaults when the calendar opens, and nobody else sees them.

* **Default calendar view**: the view the calendar opens in.
* **Visible hours**: the first and last hour shown in day and week views. Appointments outside these hours still appear.

## Set your availability [#availability]

Open **Availability**. An availability profile says when you can be booked. You can keep several and choose which one is active.

1. Choose **New profile** and enter a **Profile name**.
2. Under **Weekly hours**, set the days you work and choose **Add time range** for each block. Ranges on the same day cannot overlap.
3. Choose the **Timezone**. Salisan reads your hours in this zone when it schedules and suggests times.
4. Under **Date overrides**, choose **Add exception** for a day off (**Unavailable all day**) or one-off hours.
5. Choose **Save**. In the list of profiles, choose **Set as active** on the one you want to use. The active one is marked **Active**.

If a change leaves assigned appointments outside your hours, **Appointments are affected** lists them. Choosing **Continue anyway** keeps those appointments assigned to you. Deleting a profile keeps existing appointments assigned too.

## Set the practice booking rules [#practice-rules]

In the **Practice** group, open **Scheduling**.

* **Time grid**: suggested times land on this grid. Choose 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes.
* **Default working hours**: the days and hours applied to clinicians who have not set their own availability.
* **Appointment types**: a summary, with a shortcut to the full list.

<Callout type="warn">
  **Turn off** removes the default working hours. Clinicians who have not set their own availability then have no bookable time until they do.
</Callout>

Under **More**, four optional features are off until someone switches them on. Turning one on asks you to confirm and explains what changes. Nothing already booked changes. Turning one off is quiet and keeps the data.

* **Hour blocks** keep part of the day for one kind of appointment. **Block kinds** lists the kinds, up to 12. Built-in kinds keep their names, and you can add your own. A kind that an appointment type still uses cannot be removed.
* **Who performs each type** limits an appointment type to named people. You set them on each appointment type, and a type with nobody named stays open to everyone.
* **Locations** lets an appointment name a practice address.
* **Rooms** lets an appointment hold a room as well as a clinician.

Addresses and rooms are added in [Practice settings](/docs/en/guides/practice-settings#locations). Switching on **Locations** or **Rooms** here only lets the calendar use them.

## Manage appointment types [#appointment-types]

In the **Practice** group, open **Appointment types**. Each type is a label your team books against, and it colours its appointments on the calendar.

1. Choose **New type**, or **Create your first type** the first time.
2. Enter a **Name**. Two types cannot share a name.
3. Choose a **Default length**. Picking the type later sets the appointment's end time.
4. Choose a **Color**, then **Create**.

Drag types to set the order in the calendar sidebar and the event picker. Choose **Edit** to change a type.

To remove a type, choose **Delete**. If appointments use it, Salisan asks where to move them under **Move these appointments to**. They keep their times and take the new type's colour. Choose **Move … & delete** to confirm.

For booking itself, see [Appointments](/docs/en/guides/appointments).
