# I can't see a patient (/docs/en/troubleshooting/cant-see-a-patient)

A patient a colleague can open is missing from **Patients**, or opening the record is refused. What you can see depends on your role and on who is assigned to the patient.

## Check these first [#checks]

1. **Clear the filters.** On **Patients**, check the search box and any filters, such as **My patients**, **Team**, **Clinician** or **No clinician**. Choose **Clear filters** when the list says **No results**. If none of your teams has patients, the list shows everyone you can see.
2. **Check the practice.** Look at the practice name at the top of the sidebar. Each practice has its own patient list.
3. **Check your role.** A Member, the default role for doctors and nurses, sees the patients assigned to them. If your practice gave your role team access, you also see patients of your teams. The list says **No patients in your reach yet** until someone is assigned. A Secretary, the default front desk role, sees every patient, but clinical records stay with clinicians. Admins and owners see all patients.
4. **Check the care team.** Open a patient you can reach and look at **Care team** on the record. Someone with the permission **Assign and reassign clinicians** can add you with **Add to the care team**. Admins, owners and front desk staff have it by default.
A link to a record does not give you access to it. Do not create a duplicate patient to get around an access problem. A second record splits the history.

## If it still doesn't work [#still-stuck]

Ask an owner or admin to check your role and the patient's care team under **Organization → People**. See [People and access](/docs/en/guides/people-and-access#roles) and [Roles and access](/docs/en/get-started/roles-and-access).

If an administrator says your access is correct, [contact support](/docs/en/troubleshooting/contact-support). Send the time, the page you were on, what you clicked and the message you saw. Do not send the patient's name or any clinical details.
